 Strong Roots – Branches of Communication

PROPOSALS FOR CONFERENCE PROGRAM PRESENTATION

The Ohio Communication Association will hold the 80th annual OCA Conference at Ashland University in Ashland, OH. This theme for this year’s conference “Strong Roots – Branches of Communication” was selected to represent the evolution of OCA as a scholarly organization.

Faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students are invited to submit your scholarship for the opportunity to present your papers, posters, panel discussions, or workshops to the community of scholars and professionals form within Ohio and the surrounding states. The conference planning committee would like to see new and innovative ideas in venues such as G.I.F.T.S. (Great Ideas for Teaching Students) sessions on creative classroom practices and activities, research presentations, posters of an innovative course or project, themed panel discussions/presentations, and short courses. Cross institutional collaboration on panels is strongly encouraged.

CONFERENCE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  1. Poster

Submissions in electronic format of Microsoft Word (.doc) or .pdf are due May 1, 2016 (FOR STUDENTS) and MAY 15, 2016 FOR FACULTY AND COMMUNICATION PROFESSIONALS. GUIDELINES FOR POSTER SUBMISSIONS

A poster session presentation is to exhibit the author(s)’ research in order to gain valuable feedback from peers and senior scholars. The project is displayed on poster board with images and text for conference attendees to view and ask questions. There is a judged competition from the poster session for top undergraduates and graduates for cash prizes announced at the luncheon and or business meeting.

Posters accepted for display can include research methodologies of all types. Posters should include the project’s title, objective, research questions(s)/hypotheses, methods, results, discussion/insights, conclusion, and references. More than one research project may be on one poster.

OCA members will judge posters for a monetary award; awards will be presented at the General Business Meeting.

To participate in the poster session, the author(s) should submit the following:

  • Title page with heading of poster submission, project title, author(s) name, institution, contact email, and phone number.
  • Separate abstract page of no more than 250 words.
  • Third page with a plan for how the project will be visually displayed, including audio and visual needs in necessary.
  • A statement of professional responsibility below the abstract that contains the following: “In submitting the attached poster proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to represent this poster if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at OCA’s annual conference must register and pay required fees.”

GUIDELINES FOR INDIVIDUAL PAPER SUBMISSIONS

Submission expectations include:

  • A cover page that includes the following details: title of paper, author(s) university affiliation, contact information (address, phone, email), and a list of audio and visual needs if any. Please indicate GRADUATE STUDENT or UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT if applicable to be considered for the student best paper competition. Mark DEBUT if it is the first time author(s) is/are submitting to an academic conference.
  • A separate page with paper abstract, not to exceed 150 words.
  • A statement of professional responsibility below the abstract that contains the following: “In submitting the attached paper, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to represent this paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at OCA’s annual conference must register and pay required fees.”
  • A copy of the completed paper, not to exceed 20 pages of text (double-spaced) excluding references.

OCA will judge undergraduate and graduate papers for a monetary award; these awards will be presented at the general business meeting.

GUIDELINES FOR DISCUSSION OR PAPER PANEL SUBMISSIONS

Submission expectations include:

  • Cover page with title of the panel and a complete list of participants, including chair (required), respondent (required), and other panel participants. Include institutional affiliation and contact information (address, phone, email) for each participant, and a list of audio and visual needs.
  • A rationale and description of the panel, including goals for the session, what the audience members will leave with at the end of the panel and suitability for inclusion the program.
  • A title and abstract for each panel participant’s paper/presentation, their job title, school affiliation, and a brief paragraph on each participant’s contribution to the discussion and the general outcomes for the sessions (what will audience members leave with at the conclusion).
  • A statement of professional responsibility that contains the following: “In submitting the attached panel proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree that all panelists listed in the submission will attend the conference to present this panel if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at OCA’s annual conference must register and pay required fees.”

GUIDELINES FOR G.I.F.T.S. SUBMISSIONS

G.I.F.T.S. sessions are Great Ideas for Teaching Students. All conference attendees are welcome to submit activities, assignments, projects, games, simulations, or assessment techniques that address a specific communication theory, concept skill, or learning objective.

Submission expectations include:

  • Title page with project title, author(s)’ name, institution, contact information (address, phone, email), the heading “G.I.F.T.S. submission,” and a list of audio and visual needs.
  • A copy of the actual assignment, rationale, and instructions.
  • A statement of professional responsibility containing the following: “In submitting the attached G.I.F.T.S. proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility, I/We agree all panelists listed in the submission will attend the conference to present this panel if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at OCA’s annual conference must register and pay required fees.”

GUIDELINES FOR WORKSHOP SUBMISSIONS

Submission expectations include:

  • Cover page with the title of the workshop and a complete list of facilitators and contact information of each.
  • Workshop rationale and description: goals, need, suitability, and outcomes.
  • A brief paragraph about each workshop participant and how they add to the workshop outcomes.
  • A page describing any textbooks or material required for the workshop and a list of audio and visual needs.
  • A statement of professional responsibility containing the following: “In submitting the attached workshop proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree all panelists listed in the submission will attend the conference to present this workshop if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at OCA’s annual conference must register and pay required fees.”

GUIDELINES FOR SHORT COURSES

The purpose of short course is to provide insight into how courses can be developed to help format for special topics in communication studies. Different from G.I.F.T.S sessions that focus on specific activities within courses, these sessions focus on communication studies course development. Short courses will run 60 minutes, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Submission expectations include:

  • Cover page with the title of the short course, the facilitators, and contact information for each of the facilitators.
  • It is preferred that short courses include more than one presenter and represent more than one institution.
  • Provide and explanation of the unique qualifications establishing presenter expertise in the area being covered in the short course.

 

DEADLINE FOR STUDENTS IS MAY 1, 2016 AND MAY 15, 2016 FOR FACULTY AND COMMUNICATION PROFESSIONALS
