Additionally, I facilitated three development sessions in 2019 to audience members representing a variety of local industries. Topics included leadership, people-centric culture / interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, listening, and building world-class teams.

Lisa Waite facilitated a pre-conference course at The National Communication Association to help conference presenters refine their conference presentation skills. She is also a founding member of the new NCA Blue Ribbon Task Force for Effective Conference Presentations. The BRTF is an independent interdivisional task force spearheaded by the Training and Development Division and the National States Advisory Council. Our mission is to identify, inspire, and encourage best practices for designing and delivering effective conference presentations that communicate the story of research, promote maximum audience engagement, facilitate learning, and further scholarly advancement.

Lisa Waite was accepted into the Brene Brown Institute “Dare to Lead, Daring Classrooms” certification course October 2019. From Brown, “This is powerful work that transforms and challenges people and systems. Creating safe and brave spaces for people to show up and be seen means both skill building around vulnerability, courage, shame, and empathy, and working to dismantle the systems that devalue and dehumanize people.” It is my fondest hope to be a good steward and catalyst of this work.

Michael Beam participated in an international workshop at Schloss Dagstuhl, a computer research institute that sponsors competitive international forums on topics that bridge academia and industry. The workshop focused on Diversity, Fairness, and Data-Driven Personalization in (News) Recommender Systems. One of the goals of the conference was to develop a vision on the role of AI and data analytics for the democratic role of the media. For more information See https://www.dagstuhl.de/19482
